ABOUT US

Why do we exist?

Ethembeni in Zulu means place of hope. We have realised that when Jesus followers come together to serve Him, hope is created. Hope is a future worth having. Therefore, our vision is to see, through Jesus, hope-filled families free from the brokenness of HIV and TB.

We exhort you to keep engaging with the Ethembeni tribe of hope! What is your next action? Click on our 16th Birthday video to be encouraged. Explore our website to find calls to action that will build hope in all of us. Please send us your story of hope or any enquiry.

SERVICES

Ethembeni was established by the Howick Community Church in November 2000 as a social outreach programme in the township of Mpophomeni, about 12kms outside the town Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Today, this outreach has developed into an independent, registered non-profit organisation.

The Ethembeni tribe is diverse and passionate. We have over 100 missionaries, staff, consultants, volunteers who daily announce that Jesus can be trusted. We are a messy family.

Ethembeni LOVES volunteers – are you willing to give the most precious gift? TIME

By choosing to join us for a period of time, your story and our story becomes a shared story of hope. So welcome to the “tribe of hope” called Ethembeni. One word of warning: YOU will be changed forever. The Holy Spirit does something in all of us when we truly serve together in unity in His name.

A practical example of this is that when you leave Ethembeni you are given a Zulu name which reflects the love you have freely poured out into all of us. One volunteer who came in 2009 is now known all over the world as Khanyisile – the bringer of light. And my Zulu name is Bhekumuzi – Keeper of the House.

So what will your anointed Zulu name be when you leave us to continue to write your story on earth as it is in heaven?

Send an email now to volunteers@ethembeni.co.za with your story and we’ll get back to you.

Want to join a unique tribe of faithful servants?

Come to Howick Community Church on Thursdays at 8am to join Mavis, Wendy, Doug, Piers and others who integrate God’s word with practical help. We meet for coffee first and fellowship – encouraging each other with stories of God at work and sharing our vulnerabilities.

We’re back around 1pm filled with stories of God at work and challenged by how vulnerable families survive.

Do you want to inspire your family?

Come and serve together at Ethembeni. We have facilitated family ministry for the Milton, Andrews, Harrisons families in the past few years.

There is something for everyone to do – and loads of new friends to be made in the process of serving Jesus.
